NBA Hall of Famer and outspoken analyst Charles Barkley has weighed in on the potential game-changing move involving veteran center Jonas Valančiūnas joining the Detroit Pistons, and his reaction is turning heads across the league.
Just after the Denver Nuggets announced plans to released Valančiūnas, and following reports that Detroit head coach J.B. Bickerstaff is leading a full-court push to bring the Lithuanian big man to the Motor City, Barkley didn’t hold back when asked about the implications of the move.
“Now that’s a nice backup center, if this is true,” Barkley said on TNT’s Inside the NBA. “This would be the best-case scenario for Detroit — straight up. If you’re serious about building a team that can fight in the East, Jonas gives you toughness, rebounding, and that veteran attitude.”
Barkley praised the Pistons’ front office for finally making moves that show intention, intelligence, and a commitment to winning basketball. According to Barkley, adding Valančiūnas — a proven double-double machine and one of the league’s most underrated low-post anchors — could be the steadiest move Detroit has made in years.
“Let’s be honest, Detroit’s got some talent, but they need grown men in the paint. If Jonas is your backup center? That means your frontcourt is serious,” Barkley continued. “That’s a guy who doesn’t need the ball, but when you need stops or a bucket down low, he’s there.”
Barkley’s Endorsement Validates Bickerstaff’s Vision
Barkley’s endorsement comes on the heels of head coach J.B. Bickerstaff’s public interest in Valančiūnas, whom he called “a true professional, with the size and savvy to elevate any frontcourt in this league.” Bickerstaff is reportedly central to the recruitment effort and believes Jonas can complement young stars like Jalen Duren, Isaiah Stewart, and rookie Tosan Evbuomwan, while also serving as a mentor to the core led by Cade Cunningham.

The Pistons, already reshaping their roster with aggressive offseason moves — including Caris LeVert, Paul Reed, and a sign-and-trade for Duncan Robinson — are now looking to solidify their interior defense and bench presence. Valančiūnas fits the bill perfectly: a 13-year veteran with career averages of 12.5 points and 9.4 rebounds per game, and playoff experience to anchor a young roster.
