Fraser shares insights on coaching philosophy and rising Magpies talent
With Scott Selwood temporarily away from the club, Collingwood’s Head of Development, Josh Fraser, has stepped into the role of acting Forwards Coach in recent weeks — and he’s taken the challenge in stride.
Fraser, a former Collingwood ruckman with 200+ games under his belt and a respected figure in player development, has been leading the club’s forward line in preparation and match-day execution during a crucial stretch of the season.
“When you’re part of a strong coaching unit like we’ve got, stepping up when needed is just part of the role,” Fraser said. “It’s been a great experience and one I’ve embraced fully.”
He noted that while his day-to-day focus is typically on the younger players and long-term development, this temporary transition has allowed him to bring his development-focused philosophy to the senior forward group — focusing on role clarity, effort, and adaptability.
“For me, it’s always about making players better — not just technically, but in understanding their roles and building trust within the system,” he explained. “That doesn’t change whether you’re coaching VFL or AFL.”
Fraser also took the opportunity to highlight some of the emerging talent in Collingwood’s forward setup, pointing to Harvey Harrison before his ACL injury, and Charlie West, who will make his AFL debut this weekend, as young players showing strong signs of progression.
“Charlie’s work rate, positioning, and competitiveness have all been outstanding. He’s earned his debut, and I’m excited to see how he grabs the opportunity,” Fraser said.
Fraser’s steady leadership has helped maintain continuity in Collingwood’s forward-line structures during a period of player injuries and staff movement. His contribution further highlights the depth and versatility within the club’s coaching ranks.
Selwood is expected to return to his post soon, but Fraser’s impact during his fill-in stint has not gone unnoticed. The club continues to lean on its “next-man-up” culture, both on and off the field — a trait that’s served them well in their 2025 campaign.
