AUSTIN, Texas — In a momentous tribute to one of college football’s most iconic figures, the University of Texas has announced plans to erect a statue in honor of Earl Campbell, the legendary running back whose legacy continues to resonate more than four decades after his final game in burnt orange.
The bronze statue, which will stand proudly at the southwest entrance of Darrell K Royal–Texas Memorial Stadium, is set to be unveiled in a ceremony during the 2025 football season. The tribute will not only honor Campbell’s extraordinary achievements on the field but also recognize his lasting impact on the university, the state of Texas, and the sport of football itself.
A Texas Legend
Born in Tyler, Texas, Earl Campbell became a household name during his college years at the University of Texas from 1974 to 1977. Nicknamed “The Tyler Rose,” Campbell dazzled fans with his bruising running style, exceptional balance, and sheer determination. He quickly emerged as one of the most dominant running backs in NCAA history.
In 1977, Campbell capped off his senior season by winning the Heisman Trophy, awarded to the nation’s most outstanding college football player. That year, he led the nation in rushing with 1,744 yards and 19 touchdowns, cementing his legacy as a Longhorn legend. He was also awarded the Walter Camp Award and was named a unanimous All-American.
His jersey number, 20, was retired by the university—an honor reserved only for the most elite athletes in Longhorns history.

Additionally, the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award, named in his honor, is given annually to the top offensive player in Division I football who was either born in Texas, played high school football in Texas, or plays for a Texas college.

The unveiling ceremony, scheduled for October 11, 2025, will coincide with the Longhorns’ homecoming game against the Oklahoma State Cowboys. A pregame tribute will feature video highlights of Campbell’s college and professional career, followed by the official dedication in front of the stadium.
The university has also announced plans for a commemorative display inside the stadium, featuring memorabilia, photographs, and an interactive digital archive chronicling Campbell’s achievements and life story.
