AMES, IOWA — In a major announcement that has sent ripples through the academic community, Wendy Wintersteen has officially confirmed that she will be stepping down as the 16th president of Iowa State University.
Wintersteen, who made history as the first woman to lead the university when she assumed office in 2017, revealed her decision in a statement released earlier today. She thanked the faculty, students, and alumni for their unwavering support during her tenure and reflected on her years of service with pride.
“Serving as president of Iowa State University has been the honor of a lifetime,” Wintersteen said. “Together, we have advanced research, strengthened student success, and upheld Iowa State’s reputation as a world-class institution. After much reflection, I have decided that now is the right time for me to step aside and allow new leadership to guide the university into its next chapter.”
During her presidency, Wintersteen oversaw several major initiatives, including record-breaking enrollment years, significant campus infrastructure improvements, and expanded research funding. She also navigated the challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, leading the university through one of the most difficult periods in its history.
The Iowa Board of Regents has confirmed that a national search for Wintersteen’s successor will begin immediately. An interim president will be appointed in the coming weeks to ensure a smooth transition.
