PORTMIAMI, FL — A dream cruise ended in unspeakable tragedy today when a 19-year-old woman fell to her death from the 10th deck of Royal Caribbean’s Freedom of the Seas while the ship was docked at PortMiami.
The young woman, whose identity is being withheld pending notification of family, reportedly fell through an open window in a passenger area on the upper deck, plunging more than 100 feet onto the concrete pier below. The incident occurred shortly after 9:00 a.m. local time, just as passengers were preparing to disembark at the end of the voyage.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene within minutes of the fall, but despite their efforts, the woman was pronounced dead at the scene due to the severity of her injuries. Multiple passengers who witnessed the aftermath described the scene as “horrific” and “chaotic,” with some visibly shaken by the sight.
“It was pure panic. People were crying, screaming. You could hear the emergency code over the speakers — then the crew just swarmed the area,” said one eyewitness, who had been watching from a nearby deck.
The exact circumstances surrounding the fall remain under intense investigation. It is not yet clear whether the window was part of a public access area or a private stateroom. Royal Caribbean issued a brief statement late this morning:
